Application area

Vitamin B12 deficiency, which may manifest itself in maturation disorders of red blood cells and/or neurological disorders, such as funicular spinal disease. Vitamin B12 deficiency can be caused by prolonged malnutrition (like a strict vegetarian diet), food intake disorders and further disorders affecting the gastrointestinal tract.

Dosage and use

In case of severe neurological symptoms and signs an initial parenteral administration is recommended. The dosage depends on the pathology: for a more detailed overview, please review the patient information leaflet.

The coated tablets should be taken in the morning on an empty stomach by swallowing them unchewed with some fluid.

The duration of administration, especially concerning the initial treatment in pernicious anaemia (generally four weeks), is the doctor’s decision. The duration is determined by the therapeutic response, which is why continuous monitoring is required. In proven pernicious anaemia, vitamin B12 must be substituted lifelong.

One tablet contains cyanocobalamin (vitamin B12) 1,000 μg. Excipients: lactose, sucrose. For other ingredients, please refer to the direction for use.

B12 Ankermann®. Active substance: Cyanocobalamin 1,000 μg. Vitamin B12 – essential for your health

In recent years, the role of vitamin B12 in maintaining health, performance and well-being has increasingly become the focus of research. Deficiency of this vital vitamin is much more common than suspected. About a quarter of all women aged 25 and older and just under a third of all healthy people over the age of 65 do not take in enough vitamin B12 through their diet. Too little intake in the long term can lead to vitamin B12 deficiency. Vitamin B12 is involved in a large number of vital processes and is essential for mental and physical performance.

Vitamin B12 uptake in the body: obstacle course into the blood
The path of vitamin B12 through the digestive tract into the blood is very complex and therefore highly susceptible to disruption. Vitamin B12 can only be absorbed into the body under optimal conditions in the stomach and lower small intestine. For example, there must be enough gastric acid in the stomach to be able to dissolve the vitamin B12 from the food. In order to then be transported from inside the intestine into the blood, the nutrient requires a transport protein, the intrinsic factor. Inflammation of the gastric mucosa (gastritis) or the intestines, as well as the decrease in gastric acid production with age, can significantly disrupt these processes and lead to a vitamin B12 deficiency. But stress or medications such as the antidiabetic drug metformin or gastric acid blockers can also be the cause of vitamin B12 deficiency.

It depends on the dose
Why does "a lot helps a lot" really apply here? At high concentrations, a sufficiently high diffusion pressure is created in the intestine, which allows some of the vitamin B12 molecules to migrate through the intestinal wall all by themselves, even without the support of intrinsic factor. Studies show that with the help of high-dose vitamin B12 tablets (1,000 µg vitamin B12, e.g. B12 Ankermann® tablets, available without prescription in pharmacies), sufficient vitamin B12 can be absorbed to effectively correct a vitamin B12 deficiency and its consequences. It has been proven that a vitamin B12 dosage of more than 600 µg is necessary to effectively compensate for a vitamin B12 deficiency in older people.

Vitamin B12 tablets have the advantage over doctor-administered vitamin B12 injections of bypassing an inconvenient injection and associated risks. High-dose oral vitamin B12 therapy is therefore now considered the modern, safe and convenient way to treat vitamin B12 deficiency and associated symptoms such as fatigue and impaired concentration.3

** In contrast to food supplements, medicinal products are extensively tested by the authorities.
*** In the case of pernicious anemia or neurological disorders. Parenteral therapy is initially indicated for pernicious anemia or neurological disorders, which can be continued orally in high doses once the blood values are normal.

3 In the case of severe neurological symptoms, parenteral (injection) therapy is preferable at the beginning of treatment after a diagnosis has been made by the doctor, which can then be continued with high-dose tablets.
